Anesthesia Options

We provide a variety of anesthesia techniques to ensure a comfortable experience during your oral surgery. Below are the available methods along with descriptions and usual indications for each:

  • Description of technique: A local anesthetic (e.g., lidocaine) is administered, allowing the patient to remain fully conscious.

Usual Indications: Simple oral surgery procedures, such as minor soft tissue surgeries and simple tooth extractions.

  • Description of technique: A mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen is delivered through a nasal apparatus, keeping the patient conscious yet relaxed.

Usual indications: Simple to more complex procedures like wisdom tooth removal and dental implants.

  • Description of technique: Medications administered through an IV make the patient completely unconscious. Vital signs are closely monitored.

Usual Indications: Suitable for all types of oral surgery, especially for anxious patients or when local anesthesia fails.

  • Description of technique: Administered by an anesthesiologist in a hospital or surgery center.

Usual Indications: Recommended for extensive procedures, such as jaw reconstruction, or for patients with medical conditions.

Sedation Solutions: Ensuring Comfort with IV and Nitrous Oxide

Intravenous Sedation (“Twilight Sedation”)

Our office offers Intravenous Sedation, commonly referred to as “Twilight Sedation.” This method keeps you relaxed and calm during dental procedures, allowing you to drift in and out of consciousness while remaining comfortable. Learn how to get ready for this procedure

Administration of IV Sedation

  • A thin needle is placed into a vein in your arm or hand, through which medication is administered.

  • Some patients may experience deeper sedation, while others might remain lightly sedated, depending on their medical conditions and specific needs.

  • IV sedation is monitored continuously by our staff, ensuring safety throughout the procedure.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous Oxide is a colorless, non-irritating gas that provides effective sedation during dental procedures.

Advantages of Nitrous Oxide

  • Adjustable sedation levels during the procedure.

  • No lingering effects post-treatment.

  • Safe for most patients, with rapid onset of relaxation and pain relief.

Considerations for Nitrous Oxide

While generally safe, nitrous oxide may not be suitable for patients with certain respiratory conditions, such as emphysema or asthma. Discuss your options with your dentist to determine the best approach for your needs.
