Pre-Prosthetic Surgery
The preparation of your mouth before the placement of a prosthesis is referred to as pre-prosthetic surgery.
Some patients require minor oral surgical procedures before receiving a partial or complete denture in order to ensure the maximum level of comfort. A denture sits on the bone ridge, so it is very important that the bone is the proper shape and size. If a tooth needs to be extracted, the underlying bone might be sharp and uneven. For the best fit of a denture, the bone might need to be smoothed or reshaped. Occasionally, the excess bone may need to be removed prior to denture insertion.
We will review your particular needs with you during your appointment at any of our convenient oral surgery locations.
One or more of the following procedures might need to be performed in order to prepare your mouth for a denture:
-
This procedure involves smoothing and reshaping uneven areas of the jawbone to create a more comfortable and stable surface for dentures. It helps improve the fit and comfort of dentures by eliminating sharp or irregular bone edges.
-
Excess bone can cause discomfort or interfere with denture placement. Removing it ensures that the dentures fit properly and function well, improving overall oral comfort and health.
-
The bone ridge, which supports dentures, may need to be reduced in size to provide a better fit. This procedure reshapes the ridge to create a smoother surface for more stable denture placement.
-
Excess gum tissue can prevent dentures from fitting correctly. Removing this extra tissue creates a smoother, more comfortable surface for dentures to rest on, ensuring better functionality.
-
If teeth are impacted (stuck beneath the gums or bone), they may need to be exposed to allow for extraction or other necessary treatments before denture placement. This helps prepare the mouth for dentures by removing obstructions.
